Jacquard knitwear is one of the most in-demand techniques in the premium sweater market. The ability to knit complex multi-colour patterns directly into the fabric — without embroidery or printing — gives jacquard sweaters a quality and durability that buyers and consumers value. At Lin Sweater Factory, jacquard is one of our core capabilities, backed by computer flat-knitting machines and an in-house pattern team with over 12 years of average experience.

A jacquard pattern is knitted directly into the garment structure, which is why the surface looks more integrated and durable than print-based decoration.

What is jacquard knitwear?

Jacquard knitting is a technique where multiple yarn colours are interlaced directly during the knitting process to create patterns, motifs, or brand logos. Unlike printing or embroidery knitwear, the pattern is part of the fabric structure itself — making it more durable, colour-fast, and premium in appearance.

The technique is named after Joseph-Marie Jacquard, whose punch-card loom system was the historical basis for the technology. Modern computer flat-knitting machines have made the process far more precise and repeatable, allowing detailed patterns with 2–8 colours in a single garment. You can see more of our real production environment on the factory page.

Jacquard vs other decorative techniques

For brand buyers building premium products, jacquard is usually the preferred choice for repeating patterns because the finished result looks and wears better than printed or embroidered alternatives at comparable price points. Design requirements and file formats

To start a jacquard project, you need to provide: a pattern reference (photo, sketch, or vector file), the colour specification (Pantone or physical yarn swatch), the garment style and measurements, and your target quantity and yarn preference.

Our pattern team converts your design into a machine-readable programme and produces a physical sample before any bulk production begins. We recommend approving at least one physical sample before confirming the bulk order. If you want to understand the full sampling-to-bulk sequence, see How We Work.

Design tip: Jacquard patterns work best with clean geometric or repeating motifs. Photorealistic images and gradients are difficult to achieve — our pattern team can advise on how to adapt any design for the best knitted result.

MOQ and pricing for jacquard sweaters

Our minimum order quantity for jacquard knitwear starts from 50 pieces per style. This makes us suitable for independent brands testing a new design, boutique retailers placing seasonal orders, and e-commerce sellers who need flexibility without sacrificing quality.

Jacquard knitting takes longer per unit than plain knitwear due to the complexity of the pattern programming and the slower machine speed during production. This is reflected in the unit price — expect jacquard styles to be 20–40% more expensive than equivalent plain styles, depending on colour count and pattern complexity.
