The knit hoodie retails $35–55 on Amazon and often outsells equivalent pullovers in the same colour range — the hood adds perceived value and photographs well. But the category is also the most mis-categorised: a shopper searching "hoodie sweater" often expects a fleece-lined sweatshirt, so a knit-fabric hoodie can underperform on CTR unless images and bullet #1 make the distinction instantly clear.
Ninth in our Amazon private label series, after men's crewneck pullovers and oversized sweaters. This is our first hybrid category.
What the category actually is
A knit hoodie is built like a pullover — flat-knitted panels linked together, with a hood at the neckline. It's a sweater, not a sweatshirt. Fleece hoodies use cut-and-sewn brushed jersey on circular machines — completely different supply chain, factory, and price point.
The gauge range is wide because the category splits into two sub-silhouettes: 5G–7G chunky-knit "athleisure cozy" hoodies, and 8G–9G lighter-weight "smart-casual" ones. Our gauge numbers guide covers the visual difference. Unlike fleece hoodies, knit hoodies don't have a brushed inside — the inside looks the same as the outside.
Why this category consistently sells
Higher AOV than a pullover
The hood, drawstring, and kangaroo pocket add perceived value. Same yarn and gauge as a pullover, $8–15 higher retail. Margin cushion absorbs FBA fees cleanly.
Strong A+ content potential
The hood up / hood down styling shots give listings two silhouettes per colour. Amazon A+ and video converts faster — a meaningful lift on detail page conversion.
Three-season wear
Autumn primary, winter layered, spring as a jacket substitute. Knit hoodies carry longer sell-through than fleece hoodies which are winter-only in most US regions.
Men's and women's crossover
Unisex styling is the norm, not the exception. One graded range serves both demographic pools — rare outside oversized categories.
Where listings fail — hood, drawstring, pocket
Negative reviews in this category cluster around three construction failures, all briefable in the tech pack:
Hood collapses flat when worn down. A correctly proportioned hood needs 30–35 cm height, 24–28 cm face opening, and internal structure — a rib band around the face opening or a lightweight interlining strip. Without it, the hood reads limp in photos and flops down when worn up. #1 single-star complaint.
Drawstring pulls out in the wash. A metal-grommet drawstring exit with a knotted end lasts; a plain eyelet with raw cord ends does not. Specify grommets and metal-tipped aglets, and confirm with the factory that the drawstring is long enough to stay inserted after the first wash cycle.
Kangaroo pocket sags after a few wears. The pocket opening needs a ribbed binding or reinforcement tape. Without it, the opening stretches progressively every time a phone or hand goes in, and the pocket mouth ends up 2–3 cm wider than specified. How to manufacture a proper private label version
- Fibre: 80% cotton / 20% polyester at the $38 price point (durable, easy-care), or 60% cotton / 30% polyester / 10% wool at the $45–55 tier (better hand feel). See our cotton knitwear page.
- Gauge: 5G–7G for cozy athleisure, 8G–9G for smart-casual. Don't offer both in the same SKU range — the buyer segments barely overlap.
- Construction: Fully-fashioned shoulder, hood with interlined rib-band opening or lightweight interlining, metal-grommet drawstring with metal-tipped aglets, ribbed pocket binding on kangaroo pocket, 2×2 ribbed cuff/hem.
- Sizing: Re-graded to Amazon US. Hood dimensions stay proportional to body size — don't scale one hood pattern across all sizes.
- Colour plan: 6-colour starter — heather gray, black, olive, navy, sand, burgundy. These colours convert strongly across men's and women's segments. Our small MOQ guide covers 50 pcs per colour.
Ex-factory at 100 pcs per colour in 80/20 cotton-poly runs $12–16, landed US $16–20. Retail at $40–55 with FBA is healthy. Full breakdown in our manufacturing cost guide.
