What is an acceptable measurement tolerance for knitwear bulk?

For most knitwear, ±1.5 cm on body width and length, ±1 cm on sleeve length, and ±0.5 cm on neck and cuff dimensions is industry-acceptable. Tighter tolerances are possible but raise unit cost — buyers should ask for tolerance in the PO, not after the bulk arrives.

Why does bulk often measure differently from the sample?

Three main reasons: (1) yarn comes from a different dye lot with slightly different shrinkage, (2) bulk steaming and finishing differs from sample, (3) the sample was measured before final relaxation. A signed PP sample with a measurement chart prevents this from becoming a dispute.

Should I send a fit sample to the factory or just measurements?

Send both if possible. A physical fit sample is the strongest reference — the factory can measure exactly what you measured. A measurement chart alone leaves room for interpretation. Even a worn favourite sweater works as a reference.

Can I check measurements without flying to the factory?

Yes. Ask for: high-resolution photos with a measuring tape laid against the garment at each key point, a video of the factory measuring on a flat table, and the signed PP sample shipped to your office for direct measurement. A third-party inspector can also do this on your behalf.

How to Confirm Knitwear Measurements Before Bulk Production

Bulk arrives 3-5 cm wider than sample. Sleeves 2 cm short. Factory says "within tolerance." Buyer says "does not fit." Both are partly right. The fix happens before bulk runs.

Why bulk drifts

Different yarn lots shrink differently. Bulk steaming differs from sample finishing. Two technicians measure the same garment and disagree by 1-2 cm. None of this is fraud — it is physics. The job is to define which drift is acceptable in writing, before bulk starts.

9 measurements to confirm

Lock all nine in your PO with explicit tolerances:

Tighter tolerance costs more. Mid-tier brand: ±1.5 cm. Luxury: ±0.5 cm. Match it to your retail tier — and write it into the PO, not after bulk arrives.
