If you source knitwear from China, you've almost certainly heard of Dalang — a town in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, that produces more sweaters than anywhere else on earth. But what makes Dalang different, and why do so many international brands choose to manufacture here? This guide explains the cluster from the inside.
The numbers
Dalang Town has over 6,000 knitwear-related businesses — manufacturers, yarn traders, accessory suppliers, and service providers. Annual production value exceeds RMB 20 billion. It's been the dominant knitwear cluster in China for over 30 years, and it continues to grow as automation and upgrading replace the factories that couldn't keep pace.
Why the cluster matters for buyers
When your factory is in Dalang, the following are available within 30 minutes by car:
- Yarn in any specification — acrylic, wool blends, merino, cashmere, cotton, recycled fibres
- Trimmings and accessories — buttons, zips, labels, hangtags, packaging materials
- Testing laboratories — fibre content, colour fastness, safety testing for export markets
- Machinery and spare parts — Shima Seiki dealers and service engineers on-site
- Skilled workers — pattern masters, linking operators, QC inspectors with decades of experience
This concentration reduces lead times, reduces costs, and reduces risk. A factory outside the cluster might wait 2 weeks for a yarn delivery; in Dalang, same-day sourcing is routine.

What's changing in Dalang
The cluster is upgrading. Older factories relying entirely on hand labour are being replaced by computer flat-knitting specialists with Shima Seiki machines. Full-fashioned and whole-garment knitting is growing. Factories that can handle complex multi-gauge production and provide complete export documentation are the ones attracting international brand buyers.
Lin Sweater has been based in Dalang since 1996. We've seen the cluster evolve from labour-intensive basic production to the sophisticated manufacturing hub it is today. If you're considering a factory visit, Dalang is accessible from Shenzhen in about 60 minutes — we can arrange airport pickup and a full factory tour.
How to visit Dalang
Most buyers approach a Dalang visit as a 2–3 day trip from Shenzhen or Guangzhou. The town has decent hotels, and factories are generally clustered within a 5km radius. We recommend visiting 2–3 factories per day, with at least 2 hours per visit. Read our guide on what to look for when evaluating a factory before you arrive.
