Kids Cardigan on Amazon:
What Sells and How to Manufacture Your Own

Kids cardigans span 2T to 14Y on Amazon — a 12-size grading window, two button-safety regulations, and a growing family-matching angle. A short factory-side teardown of the category and what a proper private label version should specify.

Kids cardigans on Amazon retail in the $18–35 band. Margins per unit are lower than adult knitwear but the category has unusual structural advantages: a forced repeat-purchase cycle (kids outgrow sizes every 6–9 months), a sharp Q4 gifting spike, and a rising family-matching sub-segment selling 3 SKUs per cart. It is also the most regulated category in this series — button safety and yarn certification are non-optional.

This is the seventh piece in our Amazon private label series. Earlier teardowns covered men's cardigans and women's lightweight cardigans; kids diverge sharply on sizing, safety, and colour strategy.

What the category actually is

The best-performing kids cardigans on Amazon share a tight specification range. Knowing the formula lets you brief a factory precisely instead of ordering by photo.

The sizing span is wider than any other knitwear category on Amazon — 2T, 3T, 4T, then 4/5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14. Every size needs its own pattern block and fit sample; cutting this corner is the single fastest way to accumulate 1-star "runs small" reviews. Our tech pack guide covers kid-specific measurement charts.

Why this category consistently sells

Forced repeat-purchase cycle

Kids outgrow a size every 6–9 months. The same buyer returns to the category 2–3 times a year without any CRM push. LTV is higher than adult knitwear despite lower unit price.

Q4 gifting spike

Grandparents, aunts, and "gift for my friend's kid" purchases produce a November–December volume peak that's disproportionate — roughly 40% of annual kids-category revenue lands in those eight weeks.

Family-matching bundle sales

"Mommy-and-me" and father-son matching cardigans convert 2–3 SKUs per cart. Bundling a kids SKU with the parent version in a listing variation lifts AOV meaningfully on Amazon.

Less drop-ship spam

Safety compliance and small sizes deter the drop-ship tier. Most top kids cardigan listings are FBA brands with proper inventory — the margin environment is cleaner than men's pullovers.

Safety compliance — where most listings quietly fail

Kids cardigans sold in the US must comply with the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). Listings without this paperwork can still go live, but get taken down once a complaint is filed. Three compliance gaps matter at the factory level:

Button pull strength. Each button must pass a 15-pound pull test without detaching. Cheap melted-stud plastic buttons fail; only shank-sewn buttons with reinforced thread pass consistently. This is a choking safeguard for under-3 sizes.

Lead content on dyed yarn and metal components. Accessible components must test below 100 ppm total lead. Reputable mills supply a CPSIA certificate per lot; low-tier mills often cannot. Insist on the certificate before bulk yarn is purchased.

Tracking label. A permanent label inside the garment must carry manufacturer name, location, batch date, and cohort code. The label stays on for the product's life. Our kids knitwear guide covers the full compliance stack including OEKO-TEX Product Class I for baby sizes.

How to manufacture a proper private label version

Ex-factory at 50 pcs per colour in 80/20 cotton-poly sits around $7–10 per piece. Landed US cost $10–13. Retail at $22–30 with FBA is commercially healthy. Full breakdown in our manufacturing cost guide.
